Myopathy/Muscular Dystrophy

Summary

Myopathies/muscular dystrophies are diseases of the muscles causing weakness. There can be many different causes including autoimmune, metabolic, infectious, toxic, and genetic/hereditary. The pattern of weakness (specific muscles involved) can vary depending on the cause. Treatments can also vary depending on the cause. “ Muscular dystrophy” refers genetic injury to the muscles, although we sometimes cannot identify the specific mutation. “Myositis” refers to the inflammation of muscles caused by autoimmune, toxic, metabolic, and infectious etiologies.
